Three-way ball valves are used in applications with more than one pipe or to divert fluid in two different directions. Depending on the direction of flow, the three ports are assigned as one output and two inputs or one input and two outputs.
Three-way ball valves have three ports and can be operated manually or automated with an electric or pneumatic actuator. The hole through the ball comes in two varieties: port “L” and “T”. Three-way valves can:
• Cut or close the flow
• Change the flow between two different sources
• Combine the flow from two different sources
• Alternative flow between two different destinations
• Divert flow from one source to another destination
• Split flow from one source between two output destinations

In L you can send flow in one way or another or you can close it completely. The difference is that 3-way T-valves cannot shut off the fluid. They can also mix flows from both sides. The “T” and the “L” refer to the shape of the ball opening.
A 3-way ball valve works by rotating the handle, which rotates the ball inside the valve body, to align the cutting channels in the ball with the valve inputs and outputs. The “L” cut sends fluid through 90 degrees from one port to another. The “T” cut can be sent from one port to another, but can also be rotated so that the T makes the three ports mix.
To close all flows in a 3-way T-port valve, a separate valve must be added to the two opposite branches. To close the flow, the two valves must be closed and the ball in the 3-way valve turned towards the back of the valve.
L-valves can only direct the flow through 90 degrees or close it completely.
The T-valves can direct the flow as desired, but they cannot close it completely.
